South Korea recorded an increase in coffee imports
Between January and July 2020, coffee imports to South Korea amounted to 90,355 tons, which is 5.37% more compared to the same period last year. It is reported by KBS with reference to the Customs Service of the country. According to them, this is the first time that in the first seven months coffee imports exceeded the mark of 90 thousand tons. It is known that coffee imports have been growing since 2013. In 2019, imports amounted to 150 185.6 tons. According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, about five thousand coffee shops are opened annually in the country. So in 2016 there were 51,551 coffee shops in the country, in 2017 56,928 coffee shops, in 2018 66,231 coffee shops. The number of employees of these enterprises also increased from 152,523 people to 197,088 people, and sales from 7.1 trillion won (~ $5.9 billion) to 9.6 trillion won (~ $8.1 billion).
